an experiment...
From our discussion on Sunday August 7:
To start with, please take a look at the following pdf without peeking at the comments. Print it out. Read it. What do you think of it? What stands out? What's your reaction to reading it?
Then go on to the comments...

The text of the pdf is taken straight from a translation of the Bible called "The Message," the Book of Matthew, Chapter 8, Verses 1 to 17, but stripped of any markers, headers, footnotes, annotations, or other distractions. To see it in a perhaps more familiar form, click here.
In presenting it this way, I wanted first to try and have people look at the passage with fresh eyes. Our theme for the evening was originally supposed to be "Jesus the Healer" and yet what struck me most about the verse wasn't Jesus' healing of the sick, but rather the simple faith of the Roman soldier.
I seems significant to me that Jesus (and/or the Bible) holds up this simple faith as an example of particular noteworthiness, and yet I know my own faith is not so simple. Far from it. It is a constant struggle, highlighted with questions and scepticism and wrestling with the complex issues of modern society.
This is not an answer, not even the whole question, but it is a place to start. The discussion from that Sunday has only been touched upon here so far. Perhaps the people who were there will add their thoughts. Or perhaps this will be a whole new conversation.
