What is a church?

[updated March 2]

For those of you who have visited before, you might notice I have made a bit of a change to this entry in the interest of open discussion. By no means do I mean to be secretive, simply sensitive to the open and often random nature of the world wide web. And I think the discussion is important, both here and as continued live at the sol cafe.

The sol cafe recently welcomed a guest speaker, and friend, who presented on the topic of "What is a church?" He took us to the Book of Acts, chapter 2, and among his food for thought, shared a definition of a church as a group of followers of Christ gathering to fulfill the following five purposes: worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry, and evangelism.

What do you think?

God and You

Last Sunday, February 19, was an evening on the very specific and precisely focussed topic of "God and You" -- I don't have any further details, I was at home nursing a sick family. But I will say that God was certainly with us. We'll see if we can fill in the blanks at some point, but as usual we do have some comment from sol cafe regular, Joe...

cookies, fasting, abstract art

Sunday, February 12, saw the start of the annual sol cafe fast, as well as discussion and dissection of the themes in "Bruce Almighty" that we screened the weekend before. Thoughts were provoked, some abstract ink drawings were created, Valentine's Day cookies were consumed, fasting began... it was a most excellent evening!

Bruce Almighty

It was movie night at the sol cafe! Our gathering on Sunday February 5 started a little bit early, around 4:30 ish (sol cafe time!), for an evening of potluck and a screening of "Bruce Almighty" starring Canada's own Jim Carrey, the still charming post-Friends and post-Brad Jennifer Aniston, and the very well-cast Morgan Freeman as the Big Guy himself. Yes, you guessed it, the topic to follow was Christianity in a pop culture world. Comments from attendees may or may not be forthcoming, but the lesson is I guess you just had to be there!
