First Service Service of the New Year!
On Sunday, January 28, the sol cafe had its first "service service" for 2007, where our regular Sunday gathering and worship takes the form of rolling up our sleeves and doing some good. This month we met at the downtown Salvation Army depot to sort food and do whatever other work needed doing.
Following the work bee, the crew headed back to Bethany's place for snacks and hanging out time. Thanks for being such a great host!
And for those looking back or catching up, this week's verses from the Revised Common Lectionary were as follows:
January 28 - Fourth Sunday after Epiphany Jeremiah 1:4-10 Psalm 17:1-6 1 Corinthians 13:1-13 Luke 4:21-30Labels: RCL, weekly

Free-Range Christians
On Sunday, January 21, the sol cafe met at Cafe Dabar around 5ish. We started the evening off with music by Kyle, then discussion on the following verses from the Revised Common Lectionary:
Jan. 21 - Third Sunday after Epiphany Nehemiah 8:1-3, 5-6, 8-10 Psalm 19 1 Corinthians 12:12-31a Luke 4:14-21
The discussion was free-ranging and meaty, with apologies to the vegetarians among us. Further details may or may not be forthcoming!Labels: RCL, weekly

A documentary is in the works about churches like ours...
From their website:
"Over the next twelve months we invite you to journey with us in our attempt to capture to film what God is up to in Canada on our shift as the church. Focusing primarily on church plants and other new forms of church, this initiative is not a ‘how to’ but rather a ‘how it is’. Our hope? To discover, encourage and connect church leaders and communities…and have a little fun in the process."Labels: community news

BYOT at the sol cafe
On Sunday, January 14, 2007, the sol cafe met at Cafe Dabar around 5ish for a "Bring Your Own Topic" night, open discussion based on our readings for the week. The verses on tap for this Sunday from the Revised Common Lectionary were as follows:
January 14 - Second Sunday after Epiphany Isaiah 62:1-5 Psalm 36:5-10 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 John 2:1-11
We were blessed with music from Kyle and an active discussion on a variety of topics, including the nature of Truth and what message lay in the Master of the Banquet saying "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." Further comments may or may not be forthcoming, but we hope you'll join us next week!Labels: RCL, weekly

Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to the sol cafe family, wherever you are!
The first official sol cafe gathering for the new year took place on Sunday, January 7, at Cafe Dabar. The topic, loosely speaking, was about looking forward, epiphanies, and other such stuff. The Revised Common Lectionary verses were:
Jan. 7 - Epiphany Isaiah 60:1-6 Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14 Ephesians 3:1-12 Matthew 2:1-12
We had readings, prayer, crafts on a star theme, an opportunity to write ourselves and/or the church letters to be delivered come next advent season, and the very happy announcement that sol cafe regulars Megan and Kyle had gotten engaged over the holiday. Congrats and blessings from everyone!Labels: RCL, weekly

Now open! The sol cafe store at CafePress!
In yet another little experiment (apparently the webguy has too much time on his hands), the sol cafe now has an online store through CafePress! This web service allows people to upload their images and designs to be printed on-demand onto a variety of products, like t-shirts, mugs, and other stuff. CafePress handles all the production, order processing, and shipping... and even cuts a cheque to the sol cafe based on a markup (that we get to choose) on the stuff we sell.
Check it out, ponder the idea, and sometime in the new year we'll have a further conversation about it. For example, are we interested in other products available in addition to the ones we started with? How are the prices? How do we feel about the US$ and shipping? Do we even like this idea?
If we decide to keep the store around, we'll also need designs and/or design ideas for different products from the whole of the sol cafe gang. Maybe some sol cafe Christmas cards next year? Different styles of clothes? Books? CDs?
Discounts for bulk ordering also available!
Check out the store by clicking here...Labels: community news
