church in the world of science
Greetings all, and apologies from the sol cafe webguy for the last minute posting, but we've been dealing with the stomach flu over here (note to self: find a backup sol cafe webperson... any interested parties, please e-mail us!). But enough about that, and on to the important information!
On Sunday, March 25, starting around 5ish, the sol cafe will be holding an unusual "Service" Service/field trip/remote church gathering in the Lego display at the Telus World of Science Edmonton. The World of Science is located at 11211-142 Street and both the admission and the parking is free. Someone will be in the lobby at 5 pm to direct people to the Lego gallery -- just let them know you're there for the sol cafe gathering.
In addition to doing some volunteer work for the World of Science, we will be looking at our verses from the Revised Common Lectionary (listed below), playing with some Lego, and generally celebrating God together.
We do not have any shuttle service planned for getting from our usual meeting place, Cafe Dabar, to the World of Science, but if you need a lift, please e-mail us and we'll see what we can arrange.
Hope to see you there!
As mentioned above, our Bible readings for March 25, Fifth Sunday in Lent are: Isaiah 43:16-21 Psalm 126 Philippians 3:4b-14 John 12:1-8Labels: RCL, weekly

BYOT night at the sol cafe
On Sunday, March 18, the sol cafe will be meeting around 5ish pm at Cafe Dabar (10816 Whyte Ave) for a Bring Your Own Topic night. For those new to the concept, it is really a leap of faith, a request for God to take the lead and tap someone on the shoulder in the coming week, or just join us and inspire us as we gather to worship him. Our only guidance are the verses from the Revised Common Lectionary for this Sunday:
March 18 - Fourth Sunday in Lent Joshua 5:9-12 Psalm 32 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 Luke 15:1-3; Luke 15:11-32
Hope to see you there!Labels: RCL, weekly

A sol cafe baptism!
Please note the time and remember to switch to the NEW DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME! On Sunday March 11, the sol cafe will be meeting at 4 pm to hold a very special event, and we are excited. One of our sol cafe regulars, Megan, has decided to get baptized! Woohoo!
Now given that the tradition of the Alliance Church (the denomination of which we are a part) is baptism by immersion, and also given that the cafe where we usually meet is lacking anything larger than a standard kitchen sink, the sol cafe will be borrowing the baptistry at Southgate Alliance Church, 3916-107 Street, the church in whose basement the sol cafe began.
The baptism ceremony will be followed by a potluck at a location to be revealed at the ceremony. But as you are able, please bring along something for "snupper" -- snack and supper -- so that we can continue to celebrate with, what else, the breaking of bread.
We hope you can join us for this special occasion!
P.S. Although it may or may not be incorporated into the ceremony, the verses from the Revised Common Lectionary for this Sunday are:
March 11 - Third Sunday in Lent Isaiah 55:1-9 Psalm 63:1-8 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 Luke 13:1-9

Esther at the sol cafe
This Sunday, March 4, the sol cafe will be meeting around 5ish at Cafe Dabar for a night of as-yet-undetermined activities. All we know so far is that the Bible verses we'll be looking at from the Revised Common Lectionary are as follows:
March 4 - Second Sunday in Lent Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18 Psalm 27 Philippians 3:17-4:1 Luke 13:31-35
Hope you can join us!Labels: RCL, weekly
