Hebrews 3:6
As mentioned at the Sunday gathering previous, on Tuesday June 19 the sol cafe had an opportunity to welcome Harvey Matchullis, Leadership and Church Planting Coach from our District Office, for a visit. And I believe I speak for all in attendance when I say that it was a very good visit.
By way of a very, very brief history, the sol cafe was established nine years ago as a "church plant" out of Southgate Alliance Church. For the non-churchenese speakers out there, that just means a small group of people from Southgate saw the need (or was given a vision, if you want to be more mystical!) to start a new church. You can read a bit more of the story here, but from a purely organizational point of view, it means we are part of the Canadian Christian and Missionary Alliance under the "jurisdiction" of the Alliance's Western District Office.
That all said, we've spent a lot of our history happily carrying on the experiment that is the sol cafe below the radar of the District Office, which has had both its advantages and disadvantages. But it became clear over the course of our visit with Harvey that the time was right for the sol cafe to reestablish a more active relationship with the District Office and the larger Alliance church.
We'll be discussing this more at our next Sunday gathering (watch for more details coming soon!) but suffice it to say that it looks like the sol cafe is embarking on yet another new and exciting chapter of its history. Stay tuned!Labels: community news

Revelation III
On Sunday, June 17, the sol cafe will be gathering around 5ish at Cafe Dabar to continue our look at the book of Revelation. Some of the past discussion can be found here.
Our apologies that we have not been updating the Revised Common Lectionary readings as consistently as before, but we will just say "END OF SCHOOL YEAR" and direct everyone to the posting in our food for thought section with links to other RCL resources on the web.
Hope to see you all Sunday!Labels: RCL, weekly

5 -ish...
I was planning on talking about Revelation some more tonight, but the group that showed up at "5-ish" was quite small, so we discussed the nature of religion instead. "Is Buddhism a religion or a philosophy?" was Andrew's starter question, which turned into "what is a religion?" The size of our group doubled at "6-ish" and so it turned into quite the lively debate. Check out the Food for Thought for details.
As far as the planned topic goes, we should be picking up where we left off on Revelation next week. Meanwhile, those who can and are interested are meeting on Thursday to experience the book as it was intended - read outloud, in entirety. E-mail us for details. If that's not your thing, I would still encourage you to give "the Apocalypse" a read-through in one sitting. I guarantee that if you haven't, it will give you a new appreciation for the book.
May the Peace of the Lord be with you all this week.Labels: RCL, weekly

Revelation II
On Sunday, June 3, the sol cafe will be gathering at Cafe Dabar around 5ish for another evening in our series looking at the Book of Revelation. More details may or may not follow, but please check in!
In addition to the usual "come as you are," please bring along your daytimer or calendar if you are interested in doing an evening of reading the Book of Revelation out loud, as discussed on the previous Sunday. We'll be selecting a date which we will post to the website as soon as possible thereafter.
The sol cafe follows the Revised Common Lectionary, a shared calendar of Bible readings that covers the entire Bible over the course of a three-year cycle. The readings for this Sunday are:
| Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31 | Psalm 8 | Romans 5:1-5 | John 16:12-15 |
